Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Payments

a person experiencing the advantages and disadvantages of online payment

In 2023, only 2% of people surveyed responded that they had not made an online payment in the past year. In a post-COVID world, businesses that adapt to the growing demand by consumers to be able to pay online will thrive. Those that don’t may lose out in a big way. But it’s not all perfect, so understanding the advantages and disadvantages of online payment will help you make the best decisions for your needs.

There’s no getting around the growing trend of online payment. It’s convenient, secure, and very fast, which makes it a good choice for consumers and business owners alike. But like any payment solution, there are pros and cons to an online credit card payment system.

What is Online Payment?

Online payment is when a user pays for something on the internet, without having to be physically present with a card or cash. The online payment is facilitated by a digital payment gateway that safely transmits information between financial institutions to complete the transaction. Methods of online payment include:

  • Credit and debit cards
  • Digital wallets
  • Bank transfers
  • BNPL (buy-now-pay-later)

However, online payment systems for small business can do even more to help you operate outside of just taking payments. From enhancing the customer checkout experience to ensuring the security of sensitive financial information, online payments contribute to the overall success of business operations.

How Do I Take Online Payments?

Taking online payments is easier than you might think, especially if your provider offers setup services, training videos, and 24/7 customer support (you know, like us). So, your first step is to find a good online payment provider who knows the system inside and out and won’t disappear after setup (us again).

Once you choose your provider and are approved for a merchant account, you need to set up your store, or integrate with your existing store. Integration types are:

  • Direct Integration: Through direct integration, your website collects user details and credit card information. This is then sent to the payment gateway for fraud checks and security validation. After clearing the payment with the acquiring bank, the gateway sends a response back to your website, which then responds to the customer. With direct integration, the payments page can be enhanced with customisations so your branding is visible from start to finish.

In other words, direct integration is like a cash register located inside your physical shop. Customers shop and pay in one location.

  • Hosted Integration: Hosted integration streamlines the online payment through a secure, but separate payment page, where the details are processed. The user is then redirected back to your website for confirmation. This enables integration with the gateway without needing to collect or store cardholder data. Note that the hosted payment page will bear the branding of the payment provider, not your own store.

Think of this as a cash register placed outside of your store. Consumers shop in your store, ring up the items in their cart, but then must go outside to pay before coming back in to collect their receipt and items.

Advantages of Online Payment

Color us biased, but we’re a fan of online payments. The benefits of taking online payments add up to a massive win for businesses of any size and sector. Here are the biggest advantages of online payment:

Convenience

As society leans into digital, it just makes sense that consumers enjoy – and often prefer – making online payments. It eliminates the need to be physically present at a POS to make a purchase, so payments can be made anywhere. That means your business hours just opened to 24/7, and you don’t lose a wink of sleep.

Speed of Transactions

Online payments are fast, and in a world where time is money, that matters to consumers. And with internet quality constantly improving, people are raising their standards in terms of processing speed.

Wider Audience

One of the greatest benefits of online payment is its ability to capture a broader audience than a single brick-and-mortar location can. So, if you have a boutique in Cork or sell homemade jams in Galway, accepting online payments means your customers are now everywhere around the country – and beyond, if you like.

Cost Efficiency

Online payments take place in a digital, automated environment. Consequently, you don’t need to hire employees to handle transactions. There’s also no specialised equipment or hardware needed to accept online payments

Payment Methods

Not all your customers are the same, and they’ll have different preferences for payment methods. A particular advantage of online payment is that you can offer customers a variety of choices for how they want to pay. And accepting their preferred payment method means it’s more likely that they’ll continue to complete the payment.

Improved Customer Experience

When a customer is able to enjoy the convenience, speed, and accessibility of making a payment on your online shop, they’ll remember the positive experience, solidifying your brand in their mind.

Improved Merchant Experience

It’s not just consumers that get to enjoy the ease of online payments. As a business owner, you’ll be able to make sales without lifting a finger, making for a much improved experience  for you as well as your customers.

Disadvantages of Online Payment

There are so many advantages of online payment that it’s hard to imagine that there might be downsides. The good news is that there aren’t many, and the ones that exist can be lessened by choosing the right online payment service provider. Here’s what to look out for:

Technical Issues

Technical issues are often unavoidable, and they can cause interruptions. Generally, tech maintenance is announced in advance, but the downtime can still cause frustration for customers wanting to pay online.

Security

Fewer people are carrying cash around, so would-be pickpockets and others are heading to where the money is – online. Id theft and phishing attacks are more common occurrences, but proper payment security software can deter this sort of cybercrime.

Tech Literacy

Though upwards of 95% percent of Irish people are making payments online, there are lots of folks who aren’t the most technologically literate. This can prevent them from attempting to broach the digital barrier for online payment. This can be mitigated by choosing an easy-to-use interface that is simple to navigate.

Retailers

Purchasing products (as opposed to services) isn’t as common now as it was a couple of decades ago, thanks to the internet and e-commerce. However, retailers can use a terminal for processing virtual credit card payments to secure purchases immediately. For instance, if a customer calls with a query about the specifications of a product and is satisfied with the responses, you can take payment directly from them while on the phone. And since the sale could potentially be lost once the call has ended, it’s crucial to secure it in the moment.
